Abstraction
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003209
The combined effect of processes that remove water from precipitation before it can contribute to surface runoff. Abstraction includes interception by vegetation, surface storage in puddles, evaporation from surfaces, transpiration by plants, and infiltration into the soil. The total volume of these losses is subtracted from the total precipitation to calculate the amount of effective rainfall that generates streamflow.
