Infiltration index

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001394

  1. A value representing the average rate of infiltration during a specific storm event, often used in hydrological analysis. It is calculated by subtracting the total runoff volume from the total precipitation volume and dividing by the storm duration. This index provides a simplified measure of the soil's capacity to absorb water over a given period.

  2. In hydrologic terms, an average rate of infiltration, in inches per hour, equal to the average rate of rainfall such as that the volume of rainfall at greater
rates equals the total direct runoff.
