Chaff

Small, lightweight strips of metallic foil or metallized glass fibers released into the atmosphere. Originally used as a radar countermeasure, it is now also employed in meteorological research to track air currents and measure wind velocity. Chaff can be detected by radar, providing data on atmospheric motion.
