Chaff seeding
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004240
A weather modification technique that releases large numbers of thin metallized fibers, called chaff, into or below a thunderstorm to suppress lightning. The fibers are meant to emit corona discharge from their tips, which bleeds off charge and weakens the electric field before it can drive a flash. It was tested in US field experiments in the 1960s and 1970s, with aircraft dispersing the fibers near cloud base.
