Layer of no motion

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006897

A theoretical or observed depth in the ocean or atmosphere where horizontal currents are assumed to be negligible or zero. This concept is sometimes used as a reference level in dynamic calculations, particularly when determining absolute geostrophic currents from relative velocity profiles. Its actual existence and precise depth can vary and are subject to ongoing research.
