Crop moisture index
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000612
A weekly index developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that assesses the short-term moisture conditions for agricultural areas, reflecting the adequacy of moisture for crop growth. It is derived from temperature and precipitation data, indicating whether an area is experiencing drought or excessive wetness. Values range from -3.0 (severe drought) to +3.0 (excessively wet).
In 1968, Palmer developed the index to assess short-term crop water conditions and needs across major crop-producing regions. This index is a useful tool in forecasting short-term drought conditions.
