Drought index

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000778

  1. A quantitative, standardized measure used to assess the onset, severity, and duration of drought conditions. It integrates data from multiple indicators such as precipitation, temperature, streamflow, and soil moisture into a single numerical value. The Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) and the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) are two widely used indices for operational drought monitoring.

  2. In hydrologic terms, computed value which is related to some of the cumulative effects of a prolonged and abnormal moisture deficiency. (An index of
hydrological drought corresponding to levels below the mean in streams, lakes, and reservoirs.)
