Data Collection System, a component of environmental satellite programs designed to relay environmental data from remote ground-based or buoy-based platforms to a central processing facility. These systems use satellite transponders to collect measurements from automated sensors in areas without conventional communication infrastructure. The Argos system is a well-known example of a DCS.
