F1-layer

A sub-layer within the F-region of the ionosphere, located at altitudes between 150 and 220 kilometers. It forms during daylight hours due to the photoionization of atomic oxygen and molecular nitrogen by solar radiation. The F1-layer often merges with the F2-layer at night or during periods of low solar activity.
