Ground visibility

The horizontal visibility near the Earth's surface as determined by an accredited observer or an automated sensor at an aerodrome. This value is reported in weather observations like METARs and is used by pilots and air traffic controllers to determine if visual flight rules (VFR) or instrument flight rules (IFR) apply. Ground visibility is reported in statute miles in the United States and in meters in most other countries.
