High-level thunderstorm

A thunderstorm whose cloud base is situated at a relatively high altitude, often several thousand feet above the ground. This occurs when the lifting condensation level is elevated due to a dry boundary layer or a strong capping inversion. While the cloud base is high, the storm can still produce precipitation and severe weather at the surface, as the precipitation falls through the dry layer below.
