Hydrologic year

A 12-month period chosen for hydrologic accounting, beginning at a time when precipitation and streamflow are at their lowest, allowing for a complete annual cycle of water storage and discharge. This period is selected to minimize the amount of water stored in snowpack or groundwater at the beginning and end of the year. In many parts of the Northern Hemisphere, it begins on October 1st.
