Ice breakup
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006402
The process by which a continuous sheet of ice, such as on a river, lake, or sea, fractures and disintegrates into smaller floes. This event is typically triggered by rising temperatures, increased water flow, or strong winds, marking the end of the frozen season. The timing of ice breakup is a key indicator of climate change in many regions.
