Breakup season

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004023

The annual period in spring during which ice on rivers, lakes, and coastal seas fractures, melts, and clears. This transition from a solid ice cover to open water is driven by rising air temperatures, increased solar radiation, and mechanical forces from water flow. The timing of the breakup affects transportation and can lead to ice jams and associated flooding.
