Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006791

A local, gusty wind that descends from the mountains through a ravine or gorge, known as a 'kloof' in South Africa. This type of katabatic wind occurs at night when the mountain slopes cool by radiation, causing the adjacent air to become denser and flow downslope under gravity. Kloof winds are a characteristic feature of the nocturnal weather in the mountainous regions around Cape Town.
