Klydonograph
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006792
An instrument that records the polarity and approximate magnitude of transient high-voltage surges, such as those caused by lightning strikes on power lines. It operates by placing an electrode against a photographic plate or film, where a voltage surge creates a distinctive discharge pattern known as a Lichtenberg figure. The size and shape of the figure indicate the peak voltage and polarity of the surge, providing data for atmospheric electricity and lightning protection studies.
