Surge current
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010801
A large, transient flow of electric charge that occurs over a very short duration, characteristic of atmospheric electrical discharges like lightning. This rapid pulse of current is responsible for the primary luminous channel and the associated thunder in a lightning stroke. The peak amplitude of a surge current in a negative return stroke is typically in the range of 30 to 40 kiloamperes.
