A computer program that uses a stored body of knowledge and an inference engine to solve problems that would normally require human expertise. These systems represent information as facts and rules, allowing them to reason and make decisions within a specific domain. In atmospheric science, they can be applied to tasks such as weather forecasting, climate classification, or the interpretation of satellite imagery.
