Lightship code

A system of numerical codes and signals used historically for transmitting weather observations from a lightship to shore stations or other vessels. The code condensed data on wind direction and speed, barometric pressure, sea state, visibility, and temperature into a concise format for radio or visual transmission. This system was part of the international framework for marine weather reporting before being superseded by more modern, automated formats.
