Mesoscale convective vortex

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007218

A cyclonic circulation that develops within the stratiform precipitation region of a decaying mesoscale convective system. These vortices are typically 50 to 200 kilometers in diameter and can persist for several hours after the parent thunderstorm complex dissipates. They can sometimes serve as a focus for new convective development.
