Book-end vortices
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003976
A pair of counter-rotating vortices that form at the ends of a density current or gravity current, such as a cold air outflow from a thunderstorm. These vortices are generated by the shear between the moving current and the stationary ambient fluid. They can persist for some time after the main current has dissipated, influencing local wind patterns.
