Rear-inflow jet
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008434
A stream of relatively dry, cold air that descends from the mid-levels of the atmosphere into the rear flank of a squall line or mesoscale convective system. This jet can enhance the strength of downdrafts and contribute to the development of damaging surface winds. It is a key feature in the dynamics of severe convective storms.
