A meteorological flight condition where an aircraft is flying above a cloud layer, with clear skies above and the cloud tops visible below. This allows for visual flight rules (VFR) conditions above the clouds, even if instrument flight rules (IFR) conditions prevail within or below the cloud layer. Pilots often seek to fly on top to avoid turbulence or icing within clouds.
