Red tide

A common name for harmful algal blooms, which are discolorations of surface waters caused by a rapid increase in the population of certain microscopic algae. These blooms can produce toxins that are detrimental to marine life, birds, and humans, or they can deplete oxygen in the water. The color of the water can vary, appearing red, brown, green, or even purple, depending on the species of algae present.
