Reduced gravity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008465
An approximation used in fluid dynamics for stratified fluids, where the full gravitational acceleration is replaced by a smaller, effective value. This effective gravity accounts for buoyancy forces between layers of different densities, such as a warm air mass over a cold one. The reduced gravity is calculated as g' = g(Δρ/ρ), where g is the standard gravitational acceleration, Δρ is the density difference between the layers, and ρ is a reference density.
