Speed-up ratio

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009126

A dimensionless quantity representing the ratio of the wind speed at a specific location, often over a topographical feature, to the wind speed at a reference location in undisturbed flow. It quantifies the acceleration of wind due to terrain effects, such as hills or ridges. A speed-up ratio greater than one indicates an increase in wind velocity over the terrain.
