Storm-relative environmental helicity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009285

A measure of the potential for a rotating updraft (mesocyclone) within a thunderstorm, calculated from the wind shear and storm motion. It quantifies the amount of streamwise vorticity available to be ingested by a storm's updraft. Values above 150 m^2/s^2 are often associated with supercell thunderstorms and potential for tornadoes.
