Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009399
A violently rotating column of air that extends from the base of a supercell thunderstorm to the ground. These tornadoes are characterized by their persistent, deep rotating updraft, known as a mesocyclone, which provides the necessary shear and instability for their formation.
