Nonsupercell tornado
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007587
A tornado that develops from a parent thunderstorm that does not contain a deep, persistent, rotating updraft known as a mesocyclone. These tornadoes form from the ground up as a pre-existing, near-surface vortex is stretched vertically by a developing updraft. Landspouts and gustnadoes are types of nonsupercell tornadoes, and they are typically weaker and shorter-lived than their supercell counterparts.
