Thermal neutrality

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009588

A state of the atmosphere where the environmental lapse rate is equal to the dry adiabatic lapse rate, meaning a parcel of unsaturated air, if displaced vertically, experiences no net buoyancy force. In this condition, the atmosphere is neither stable nor unstable for dry air. This state is rarely perfectly achieved but represents a balance point between stability and instability.
