Thermal low

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002782

  1. A low-pressure system that forms primarily due to intense heating of the air near the surface, causing it to expand and become less dense. These systems are common over large landmasses during summer, leading to rising air and often contributing to monsoon circulations. The Arizona monsoon is influenced by a thermal low.

  2. Area of low pressure that is shallow in vertical extent and produced primarily by warm surface temperatures.
