Thermal radiation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009591

Electromagnetic radiation emitted by all matter with a temperature above absolute zero. In the atmosphere, this radiation is primarily in the infrared spectrum and is responsible for the greenhouse effect. The Earth's surface and atmospheric gases absorb and re-emit thermal radiation, influencing the planet's energy balance.
