Terrestrial radiation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009560

The longwave electromagnetic radiation emitted by the Earth's surface and atmosphere. This emission occurs primarily in the thermal infrared portion of the spectrum, with peak wavelengths between about 8 and 15 micrometers, corresponding to the planet's surface and atmospheric temperatures. A portion of this outgoing radiation is absorbed and re-emitted by greenhouse gases, a process central to the greenhouse effect.
