Counterradiation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004738
The longwave infrared radiation emitted downward from the atmosphere to the Earth's surface. This process is a key component of the greenhouse effect, as gases like water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane absorb outgoing terrestrial radiation and re-radiate a portion of it back toward the ground. On a clear night, the amount of counterradiation is lower than on a cloudy night, leading to greater surface cooling.
