Countergradient wind

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004737

A wind component that blows in a direction opposite to the pressure gradient force. This phenomenon occurs in specific atmospheric conditions, often associated with strong turbulent mixing or complex terrain, where momentum transfer processes overcome the direct influence of the pressure gradient. It is observed in situations like sea breezes or mountain-valley circulations, where local thermal effects can generate localized pressure anomalies.
