Weak echo region
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003055
An area of low radar reflectivity on the inflow side of a severe thunderstorm, situated below a strong, overhanging radar echo. This region, also known as a WER, indicates the presence of a powerful and sustained updraft carrying small, newly formed water droplets and ice crystals upward so quickly they cannot grow large enough to produce a strong radar return. A bounded weak echo region (BWER) is a WER enclosed by high reflectivity, signaling a very intense, rotating updraft.
(Abbrev. WER) - A WSR-88D radar product which displays reflectivity for up to 8 elevation angles for a radar operator selected location as a set presentation of a storm. The plains in this product are presented in an ascending order, lowest plain is lowest elevation angle selected. It is used to depict storm tilt and to identify Weak Echo Regions (WER) and Bounded Weak Echo Regions (BWER) in thunderstorms.
