A radar echo signature within a severe thunderstorm, characterized by an area of weak reflectivity aloft that is surrounded by higher reflectivity. This feature indicates a strong updraft that is carrying precipitation particles upward so rapidly that they do not have time to grow to detectable sizes or fall out. The vault is often associated with the mesocyclone and is a precursor to tornadogenesis.
