Bonus consideration

An upfront payment made by a lessee to a lessor as an incentive to secure an oil and gas lease. This payment is typically a lump sum paid upon the execution of the lease, regardless of whether production is ever established. It compensates the landowner for granting the exclusive right to explore for and produce hydrocarbons from their property for a specified term.
