Hot tapping

The process of creating a new connection to an existing pipeline or vessel while it remains in service under pressure, without interrupting the flow of its contents. This technique involves welding a branch connection and then using a specialized drilling machine to cut a hole through the pipe wall. Hot tapping is performed under strict safety protocols to prevent leaks or spills.
