Eflornithine hydrochloride

Term · Oncology and biomedicine · MLC-T-ONC-002691

  1. A drug used to reduce the risk of relapse in adults and children with high-risk neuroblastoma that has gotten better after treatment with certain prior therapies. It is also being studied in the treatment of other conditions and types of cancer. Eflornithine hydrochloride blocks an enzyme called ornithine decarboxylase, which may help keep cancer cells from growing. It is a type of enzyme inhibitor. Also called Iwilfin.

  2. The hydrochloride form of eflornithine, a difluoromethylated ornithine compound with antineoplastic activity. Eflornithine irreversibly inhibits ornithine decarboxylase, an enzyme required for polyamine biosynthesis, thereby inhibiting the formation and proliferation of tumor cells. Polyamines are involved in nucleosome oligomerization and DNA conformation, creating a chromatin environment that stimulates neoplastic transformation of cells.
