A theoretical point, line, or plane from which measurements are made and geometric tolerances are established on a part. In additive manufacturing, datums are specified in the computer-aided design (CAD) model to control the part's orientation and dimensional accuracy during printing and inspection. These reference features are used for part setup in post-processing steps like machining and for verification against design specifications using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM).
