Datum

A reference surface or system against which all measurements in a survey are made, providing a consistent basis for position and elevation. This can be a horizontal datum, defining coordinates on the Earth's surface, or a vertical datum, defining elevations relative to a mean sea level. Common horizontal datums include NAD83 and WGS84, while vertical datums include NAVD88.
