Backsight

A reading taken with a surveying instrument on a point of known elevation or position, typically the last point occupied or a benchmark. This measurement is used to determine the height of the instrument (HI) or to orient the instrument for subsequent readings. It serves as a reference for all forward measurements in a leveling or traverse survey.
