Level staff

A graduated rod used with a leveling instrument, such as a dumpy level or automatic level, to determine differences in height between points on a surface. An observer sights the staff through the instrument and records the reading at the point where the horizontal crosshair intersects the scale. These staves are typically made of wood, aluminum, or fiberglass and come in lengths from 3 to 5 meters, with graduations marked in meters, centimeters, and millimeters.
