Staff

A long, graduated rod used in surveying and leveling to measure vertical distances or differences in elevation. The staff is held vertically at a point, and a leveling instrument is used to read the height indicated on its scale. Common types include the E-pattern staff and the bar code staff, which is read by digital levels.
