A reflective or distinctive object placed at a survey point to provide a clear sighting reference for a surveying instrument. Targets enhance the accuracy of angle and distance measurements, especially over longer distances or in conditions of poor visibility. Common types include prisms for total stations and range poles with reflective sheeting.
