Target

A biological entity on which a chemical or other agent acts, ranging from a whole organism, organ, or tissue to a single cell or one of its components such as a receptor or enzyme. In drug research the target is a receptor, enzyme, ion channel, or transporter, whereas in toxicology the word often means a target organ, such as the liver or kidney, where an agent produces characteristic damage.
