Toxicophoric group

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012178

A specific functional group or structural feature within a molecule that is responsible for its toxic properties. This part of the molecule interacts with a biological target, such as an enzyme or receptor, initiating a chain of events that results in an adverse health effect. The nitroaromatic group (Ar-NO2) is an example of a toxicophoric group found in many compounds with mutagenic or carcinogenic activity.
