Ames/salmonella test
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000482
A biological assay used to assess the mutagenic potential of chemical compounds by observing their ability to cause mutations in specific strains of the bacterium Salmonella typhimurium. The test measures the frequency of reverse mutations that restore the bacteria's ability to synthesize histidine, indicating a mutagenic effect. It is widely used as a preliminary screening tool for carcinogens.
