Genotoxic

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004848

Describing a chemical agent or physical process that damages the genetic material (DNA and RNA) within a cell. This damage can manifest as mutations or chromosomal aberrations, potentially leading to cancer or heritable defects. Genotoxicity is assessed through specific assays like the Ames test, which measures the mutagenic potential of a substance on bacteria, or the micronucleus test in mammalian cells.
